US CDC Approves Pfizer For Children Aged 5 to 11

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved Pfizer-COVID-19 BioNTech’s vaccination for children aged 5 to 11, according to Anadolu Agency.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky agreed with the ACIP recommendation that children between the ages of 5 and 11 should receive the Pfizer-BioNTech paediatric vaccination against COVID-19.

According to the decision, up to 28 million children in the age range would be eligible for the vaccinations.

“Vaccination, along with other preventative measures, can protect children from COVID-19 using the safe and effective vaccines already recommended for use in adolescents and adults in the US,” the CDC said in a press statement.

Additionally, the distribution of paediatric vaccinations throughout the country has allegedly begun, with vaccines being sent to paediatric health care provider offices, pharmacies, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), and other locations.

“In adult vaccine trials, vaccination was nearly 91 percent effective in preventing COVID-19 among children aged 5-11 years," Walensky said .

US President Joe Biden issued the following statement: “Today, we have reached a turning point in our battle against COVID-19: authorisation of a safe, effective vaccine for children age 5 to 11. It will allow parents to end months of anxious worrying about their kids and reduce the extent to which children spread the virus to others. It is a major step forward for our nation in our fight to defeat the virus."

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), children under the age of 18 account for 39% of COVID-19 cases.  Approximately 8,300 COVID-19 cases in children have led to hospitalisation, with 146 children dying.

In its emergency use authorization, the FDA has previously approved lower dosages for children than those for adults and teens. The FDA-approved dosage for children is one-third of what is given to the other age groups.
