  • “SAGE recommended that moderately and severely immunocompromised persons should be offered an additional dose of all WHO EUL (emergency use listing) Covid-19 vaccines as part of an extended primary series.”

Third Dose Booster Vaccines Advised For All Above 60 Years Old Who Received Sinovac or Sinopharm Covid-19 Vaccines Says WHO

On Monday (Oct 11), the World Health Organization's vaccination advisers recommended that individuals with weakened immune systems be given an extra dose of all licenced Covid-19 vaccines.

Additionally, the UN health agency's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation (SAGE) recommended that over-60s who have received two doses of China's Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines be given a third dose of Covid-19 vaccine.

The experts emphasised that they were not proposing an extra “booster dose" for the general public.

WHO has approved several Covid-19 vaccines for emergency use during the pandemic, including those developed by Pfizer-BioNTech, Janssen, Moderna, Sinopharm, Sinovac, and AstraZeneca.

WHO is on the brink of determining whether or not to classify India's Bharat Biotech jab as a vaccine for emergency use.

SAGE met for four days last week to review the most recent data and information on a variety of vaccinations for Covid-19 and other diseases.

“SAGE recommended that moderately and severely immunocompromised persons should be offered an additional dose of all WHO EUL (emergency use listing) Covid-19 vaccines as part of an extended primary series," the group said.

“These individuals are less likely to respond adequately to vaccination following a standard primary vaccine series and are at high risk of severe Covid-19 disease."

Additionally, it said that for those fully vaccinated with Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines, a third dose of the same vaccine “should be offered to persons aged 60 and above".

An alternative vaccine “may also be considered based on vaccine supply and access considerations".

As an additional point of clarification, SAGE said that while implementing this suggestion, countries should first strive to achieve maximum two-dose coverage in that population, before administering the third dose of the vaccine, starting with the oldest age groups.
