Sinovac and AstraZeneca Vaccines Have Been Approved As Booster Vaccines

The Drug Control Authority has granted conditional approval for Sinovac and AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccines to be used as booster doses, according to the Health Ministry.

Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Director-General of Health, said in a statement yesterday that authorisation had been issued for the two vaccines to be administered as booster doses for anyone aged 18 and above who had previously received vaccines of the same type (homologous).

“The booster vaccine for AstraZeneca will be administered six months from when the second dose was given while for CoronaVac, the booster dose will be administered three to six months after the second dose,” he said.

The Covid-19 Immunisation Booster Task Force will plan and publicise the delivery of booster doses for both vaccine types to targeted populations on a regular basis.

He said that the Health Ministry wished to emphasise that the conditional registration approval requires monitoring and assessment of the vaccines’ quality, safety, and effectiveness using the most recent data.

“This is to ensure that the comparison of benefits over risk of the vaccines remains positive,” he emphasised.

He said that the ministry was dedicated to extending the country’s access to Covid-19 vaccination products.

Similarly, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin tweeted that the conditional approval of the AstraZeneca and Sinovac booster doses would enable the Vaccination Technical Working Group to make recommendations on who would be eligible to get the vaccine under the heterologous booster programme.

He also informed the Dewan Rakyat yesterday that the ministry will reopen many vaccination centres and use the services of public and private health institutions to speed the delivery of booster doses.
