Pharmacists Urged By Health Minister To Guide Malaysians Into The Endemic Phase

What does being in an endemic mean? Well, to simply put it, the word endemic is most commonly used to describe a disease that is prevalent in or restricted to a particular location, region, or population. With that being said, the Malaysian government is preparing for the transition of Covid-19 in Malaysia from a pandemic phase to an endemic.

The Health Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin has stated that community pharmacists should work hand in hand with the government whilst learning from each other and guiding fellow Malaysians into the endemic phase. This statement sheds light on the nation’s preparatory rate to live with Covid-19 as it moves into an endemic phase.

Khairy has also stated that community pharmacists indeed play a vital role in the fight against Covid-19. The reason? Well, community pharmacists are the gatekeepers of the nation’s healthcare system.

Adding on, he stated, “You are frontlining it … when doctors and hospitals, those in the front line of healthcare are overburdened, the next in line must step in, and these are our community pharmacists. As healthcare professionals, pharmacists have a key role, not only during the pandemic but for many years, engaging directly with the community, continuing to care for patients… We can work together in areas like preventive medicine and educating the public, not just on diseases, but also on wellness.”

This topic came about when he was officiating the ‘Reinvent Pharmacy Biz: Adapt Beyond the Crisis’ by Malaysian Community Pharmacy Guild (MCPG) webinar, in conjunction with the World Pharmacists Day, which is celebrated on 25th September annually.

This notion was further strengthened when he cited that self-test kits are another principal aspect where community pharmacists are responsible. This is mainly because along with other healthcare facilities, pharmacies are the proper channels to buy self-test kits. Therefore, properly educating the public on methods of using the self-test kits, their storage and disposal as well as the follow-up and post-results counseling sessions are indeed crucial.

Applauding MCPG for their commitment to taking real action to prepare, train and equip its members in the event of another surge or new variant, Khairy also said, “The ministry welcomes MCPG’s involvement to engage and improve our healthcare system and we are committed to seeing that your profession continues to progress and move forward in this area. As this program has so aptly put, we must now adapt and look beyond the Covid-19 crisis into all other aspects of healthcare. Certainly, there is much more we can do together.”
