Malaysian MPs Not Required To Wear Face Masks During Proceedings Says Speaker

Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun announced that MPs would no longer be forced to wear face masks when speaking in the House.

Azhar said that this was because no positive cases of Covid-19 rapid antigen testing (RTK-Antigen) or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing had been identified since the proceedings started on Sept 6.

“Throughout the present proceedings, no one was tested positive in the vicinity of Parliament. Based on risk assessment, the Health Ministry is of the opinion that face masks are allowed to be removed during debates. But, MPs are advised to quickly wear back their face masks after delivering their speeches."

Several Members of Parliament requested last Monday (Oct 4) to be allowed to make their addresses without wearing face masks.

According to some, MPs struggled to breathe while delivering speeches in the House while wearing face masks.

Wearing A Mask Protects Those Around You

COVID-19 is mostly transmitted through respiratory droplets. When you cough, sneeze, talk, shout, or sing, respiratory droplets enter the air. These droplets may subsequently land in the mouths or noses of those in close proximity, or they may be inhaled.

Masks act as a simple barrier, preventing your respiratory droplets from contacting others. Masks worn across the nose and mouth have been shown to decrease the dispersion of droplets.

The CDC recommends that you wear a mask even if you do not feel ill. This is because many studies have shown that individuals infected with COVID-19 who do not develop symptoms (asymptomatic) or who do not yet exhibit symptoms (pre-symptomatic) may still transmit the virus to others. Wearing a mask protects others around you in the event that you are sick but have no symptoms.

CDC emphasises that it is particularly critical to wear a mask while inside with individuals you do not live with and when you are unable to maintain a minimum of six feet of separation, since COVID-19 transmits primarily via close contact between people.

Your Masks Protects You Too

A cloth mask, according to the CDC, also provides some protection. How effectively it protects you against virus inhalation is likely dependent on the materials used and the way the mask is made (factors like type of material, the number of layers of fabric, and well the mask fits). The CDC is currently doing research on these factors.
