AstraZeneca Recipients To Receive Booster Dose Appointments Soon

According to Minister of Health Khairy Jamaluddin, those who received AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccinations will soon be eligible for a booster dose. However, no information on the time interval for AstraZeneca recipients has been disclosed.

In contrast, the third dose is recommended six months after the second dose for Pfizer recipients and three months after the second dose for Sinovac recipients. As with previous Pfizer and Sinovac recipients, those who have had AstraZeneca will get their booster appointment directly via the MySejahtera app.

Simultaneously, Khairy added that patients would have options for booster doses other than the Pfizer vaccination if they have allergies and are unable to take the mRNA dose. Sinovac and AstraZeneca are possible options, however, further details will be released at a later date.

Additionally, the minister underlined that despite the booster rollout, the definition of “fully vaccinated individuals" remains the same. This implies that even if you opt not to get the booster dose, you are considered fully vaccinated as long as you have had both original doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer, Sinovac, or AstraZeneca.

Malaysia has recently started administering booster doses and third doses to high-risk categories, including frontline workers, the elderly with comorbidities, and immunocompromised individuals. Pfizer-Comirnaty BioNTech’s vaccine was the first to be authorized for use as a booster dose in Malaysia.

Additionally, the government allowed the mix-and-match strategy, dubbed heterologous vaccination, which involves utilising the Pfizer vaccine as a booster dose for those who received a different brand of primer doses. Due to the lack of another vaccine brand authorized as a booster, Pfizer recipients are presently receiving homologous doses.
